Privacy Policy

Your trips stay yours.

Navigo is built offline-first, which means most of what it does happens entirely on your phone and never reaches us. This page explains what we do and don’t collect.

Last updated: 15 June 2026

1. Overview

This Privacy Policy describes how Navigo (“Navigo,” “we,” “us” or “our”) handles information when you use the Navigo mobile application and this website (together, the “Service”). By using the Service, you agree to the practices described here.

The short version: journey planning, route calculation, departure reminders and your location are processed on your device. We don’t sell your data, we don’t serve ads, and we collect only the minimum needed to sign you in and run shared features.

2. Who we are

Navigo is a student-built campus transit companion for Wits University students. For any privacy questions, you can reach us at admin@navigotransport.com.

3. Information we collect

We keep collection deliberately small. The categories are:

a. Account information

To sign in, you provide your student number, which is used to construct your university email address (e.g. number@students.wits.ac.za) for a one-time verification code. We also store the first and last name you enter so the app can greet you. This account information is held by our authentication provider (see Section 6).

b. Information processed on your device

Your journey searches, planned trips and reminders are computed and stored locally on your phone. Your location, when you grant permission, is used on-device to find nearby stops and departures. This information is not transmitted to us.

c. Lost & Found content

If you choose to post a Lost & Found item, the text and any optional photo you attach are uploaded so other students can see them. Don’t include sensitive personal information in these posts.

d. Waitlist information (this website)

If you submit your email on this site, we use it solely to notify you about Navigo’s launch. You can unsubscribe at any time.

4. What stays on your device

Because Navigo is offline-first, the following never leave your phone unless you explicitly share them:

  • The timetable and route data used to plan trips.
  • Every journey you search for or plan, and the results.
  • Your precise location and the stops near you.
  • Your reminder schedule and notification preferences.

5. How we use information

  • To authenticate you and keep you signed in.
  • To personalise the app (for example, greeting you by name).
  • To deliver shared features such as service alerts and Lost & Found.
  • To send the local notifications you ask for (departure reminders).
  • To keep the Service secure, reliable and free of abuse.
  • To contact waitlist subscribers about the launch (website only).

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

6. Sharing & third parties

We share information only with service providers that help us run the Service, and only as needed:

  • Backend & authentication provider — stores your account, the names you enter, service alerts and Lost & Found posts, with row-level security so users only access what they should.
  • Email delivery provider — sends your one-time sign-in code and, if applicable, waitlist updates.
  • Map provider — when you’re online, map tiles are loaded from a third-party mapping service to display the map. Their handling of requests is governed by their own privacy policy.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety and security of our users and the Service.

7. Data retention

  • Account information is kept while your account is active and deleted on request.
  • Lost & Found posts are automatically purged a short time after posting (older items are removed on a rolling basis).
  • On-device data remains until you clear it or uninstall the app.
  • Waitlist emails are kept until launch or until you unsubscribe.

8. Your rights & choices

  • Access & deletion — request a copy of your account data or ask us to delete your account at any time.
  • Location — you can decline or revoke location permission in your device settings; trip planning still works.
  • Notifications — turn reminders on or off in the app or your device settings.
  • Lost & Found — you can delete posts you created.
  • Waitlist — unsubscribe using the link in any email.

To exercise any of these, email admin@navigotransport.com.

9. Security

We use industry-standard safeguards: encrypted connections, row-level security on shared data so users can only reach their own records, and signed, expiring tokens for account activation. On-device data benefits from your phone’s own security. No method of transmission or storage is ever completely secure, but we work to protect your information.

10. Children's privacy

Navigo is intended for university students and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age required by applicable law without appropriate consent. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will remove it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.

12. Contact us
